Group Simulation: Student Excuses
The School wants consistency amongst teachers in the Communication department. This meeting has been called of to decide universal standards for how to handle student problems and situations in Communication 1313. (These are all based on real cases)
Please have one person write the group answer to these questions and turn them in when you are finished.
Student speeches:
Do you allow the student to make up the speech?
Do you deduct points for being late? How many?
I. Student comes the day of the speech and says that they are not prepared. They ask if they can do it tomorrow?
2. Student reports that they had to work their shift plus someone else's at work so they didn't have time to prepare. They call the morning of the speeches to ask if they can have another day to prepare.
3. Student asks on Friday if they can do the speech the next day because they want to have time to load up on the bus to go on an athletic trip. Not an excused athletic absence but a request to prepare for a trip.
4. Student comes to your office before the speech and says they are sick and would like to do it on another day. They do not appear to be sick.
5. Student shows up before test and says they have an intestinal flue. They show you their outline and note cards to show they are prepared to speak but ask if they can speak a different day.
6. Student reports that yesterday (the day they were to speak) that their car broke down on the way to class.
7. Student reports that their baby-sitter is sick and they have ho one else to watch their kids.
8. Student says they must go home for a week to visit a family member who is dying with cancer. 9.
Papers/Homework

I. My cat/dog/ little brother/aliens/ferret ate my homework.
2. My computer caught a virus, my floppy broke, my computer ate it.
3. It's in my roommates car, parents house, boyfriends apartment and I don't have the key.
4. I forgot it and it's sitting in my room.
5. I did it but it's in the wrong format, can I have another day.
6. It's done but I have been out of town and parents don't have a computer to type it, can I have another day?
7. I lost it somewhere between my first class and this one.
8. My family was visiting from out of state and I didn't have time to do it.
9- Student puts paper in your mailbox. No note no excuse. Paper was due 2 days ago.
Tests
Do you allow the student to make up the test?
Do you deduct points for being late? How many? Do you present a more difficult test?
1. Student misses test because they were taking finals at the University. Their two classes overlapped for that day. You were not notified in advance.
2. Student misses test because their alarm didn't go off and they overslept.
3. Student reports that they misread the final test schedule and missed the final.
4. Student says that they were sick the day of the test. they do not have a doctors note .
5. Student misses test because they had a paper in English due and a test in Algebra that day. The times did not conflict with this class. Student says they just didn't have time to study for your test so they didn't come.
6. Student calls before test and reports that they have a sick child.
7. Student has to go out of town for a grandparents funeral.
8. Student misses makeup test. No reason given.
Grades:
1. Student has an 88.3% at the end of the class. The student discloses that they need a 90% II A II in this class or they will loose all their financial aid. Do you curve the grade to an "A"?
2. Student makes a 89.2% in the class. Student has been a good student, hasn't missed any classes and tries really hard. Do you round grade to an "A "?
3. Student athlete must make a "C" to play in athletic events. The athletic supervisor requires weekly grade reports. Student's average in class so far is 67%. Do you help the student out by reporting their grade as a "B" so they can play in the big game on Saturday?
4. The athletic department asks if there is any extra credit that the athlete can do to improve their 67% average. Do you allow extra credit?
5. Several students, each with different situations, ask you during the last few weeks of class if there is anything that they can do to raise their grades. Do you help them out?
6. Student has a 77% at the end of the semester in your class. Student says that there parents will make them move back home and stop paying for their college if they don't make a "B" in all of their classes. Do you give them a "B"
